Do more to cut violent crime in SC

SEPT. 23, 2011 — With headlines blaring across the state about how violent crime went down 6 percent nationally, you might think South Carolina is a lot safer for everyday Joes and Janes.

According to the FBI’s annual crime report, violent crime in South Carolina declined at about twice the national average — by 11 percent over the previous year. Hooray! We’re doing something better than most people in the rest of the nation. So let’s look a little deeper than percentages. Let’s look at actual numbers.

In 2009, the state reported 670.8 incidents of violent crime per 100,000 people in the state. Last year, the number dropped to 597.7 incidents per 100,000 people.

Barbecue should be state’s official meat
